Computer Security

We've seen a variety of news stories and emails lately regarding security of personal data on the internet, the latest being the so-called Heartbleed virus.  But there are others as well.  It's a genuine concern, but are we keeping it in perspective with all the other risks we take every day?

I thought a video from PBS's Idea Channel probing the question:

"By Going Online, Are We ‘Choosing’ to Have Our Privacy Invaded?"

The full video is 12+ minutes, but the last half is a discussion of comments from previous episodes.

Here's the link to the Farhad Manjoo article in the NYT from April 9 on the Heartbleed virus and internet security.

And this issue is not confined to behemoth corporations like Google, Amazon, or Verizon.  A recent article in Education Week noted the concerns regarding education data services companies such as Pearson, Khan Academy, and Edmodo.

So what do you think?  Should we reduce our use and dependence on digital technology or should we be demanding and expecting all vendors to do a much better job of securing their apps and greater transparency?  Hit the Comments button.
