Rear Admiral Grace Hooper Celebration Day is this Wednesday!

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is the world's largest gathering of women technologists. It is produced by the Anita Borg Institute and presented in partnership with ACM (the Association for Computer Machinery which is the premier professional organization for computing professionals).  You can learn more about the planned activities.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Rear Admiral "Amazing Grace" Hopper, she was a pioneer of early digital electronic computing.  She was the first to program the Harvard Mark IV.  Among her numerous accomplishments was laying the foundation of modern programming languages and establishing the fundamental principles of sound software engineering practices.  Her contributions to computer science and modern digital technology rank with Vint Cerf (inventor of the internet) and Robert Metcalfe (inventor of ethernet networking).  Some argue she rightfully could lay claim to being the "Mother of Computer Science".

Perhaps this could be a good segue for a discussion about women in science, both historically and the current trends.
