Making Simple Edits to Your Video Content

A lot of times when you find some good video content for your lesson, you'd like to be able to do some simple edits.  Perhaps trim off the last 30 seconds, skip the first minute or so, or cut out a short segment in between.  You may also want to splice together a few short segments you've found into one longer video. You can do that.  Its actually pretty easy.

YouTube has a video editor built in which will allow you to make a number of manipulations with the video including cut (delete), split, or splice multiple segments.  You can also add transitions, such ad fades, where you've split or spliced segments.  YouTube does not have the ability to add your own soundtrack nor does it have editing of the sound track integral to the video.  In the Video Manager, select the video to edit then in the left panel select Creative Tools, Video Editor.

Movie Maker is a free application from Microsoft (it is already loaded on your tablet) which has all the editing controls of YouTube plus some more.  In addition to the ability to manipulate the video and add transitions, Movie Maker has the ability to add a soundtrack, edit the track and sync it to the video.  You can also output the finished project in a number of formats

There are a number of other free open-source apps for video editing.  If you search, you will find.

Posting your Videos for Student Viewing

Of course, a simple solution is YouTube, but that presents a problem here at school.  An alternative web-based service for hosting videos, making them available via link, is VIMEO.  The basic service is free and you can store up to 500MB of video.  You can "share" a video to another Vimeo user or provide them with a URL link to view.

You can also post your videos on your EdLine website.  In addition to posting the URL link to your YouTube or Vimeo video, you can upload the video or embed in a document.  To upload, click the Add Content "+" sign and select Video among the media options.  Your video should be in flash format (flv, f4v); if not, EdLine will convert it.  To embed, create a document you want that you want the video to appear in; in edit mode, select the HTML edit option and insert the embed code from vimeo or youtube.
