I spotted this article on Edutopia a few days ago (and just filed it away). This morning, in the library, I watched as many students working on a class assignment were 'plugged in' on their phones/ipods (presumably) listening to music. It prompted me to recall this article and the myth most students - high school and college - that background music helps them study. This article, reflecting specific research on the subject indicates that the music while studying or doing intellectual work is a hindrance.
The same is true for multi-tasking in general.
I just thought this might be interesting to many as we always get that request "Can we listen to music while we work?" Seems harmless, and they do appear to be working diligently. But are they working proficiently and productively?
Makes me rethink what I have read/heard over the years...especially the "Mozart Effect." Good article!
