User Survey

Just before the holiday break I asked faculty and staff to respond to a simple survey about the computer applications that you use or would like to use.  The purpose was to support our planning for the transition to Google Apps for Education by taking an initial inventory of users' preferences and needs when it comes to software applications.

The results were not at all surprising, but it is always good to confirm one's assumptions with facts.

There were 20 response, a pretty healthy response rate.

Key points:

Everyone is using Google Drive - Docs, Slides and Sheets - and also continues to use Microsoft Office - Word, PowerPoint and Excel.  This probably indicates that most are transitioning to Google - creating new content in Google but they have a large legacy of existing Microsoft content.  This probably also means their is a need for training about transitioning and converting existing content into Google quickly and easily.

No one is using video or audio applications for creating/editing content or creating screencasts.  Several comments of "no time" probably indicates most simply don't have the time to invest in creating this content.

Only a few mentions of applications people would like, but don't have.  These included image editing (Photoshop), note taking and curating (Evernote) and PDF file management (editing, merging, splitting).

For internet browser preferences, only one response did not identify Chrome although several people identified multiples.  Safari came up a few times (probably for folks with Macs at home).

The school-issued tablet does not get much use as a tablet.  A majority (60%) indicate they prefer using the desktop PC in their classroom and the remaining 40% use the device only in the docking station as a desktop PC.  Is this because we do not have any mobile applications to use, the quality of the hardware, or some combination?

Finally, teachers are using their own mobile device at school for school work.  60% use their own smartphone or tablet for mail, messaging, calendar.
